win in Castle Bar for seniors…

Castle Bar League Cup
Killarney Athletic 5 Mainebank 2
This game was the biggest challenge in a few weeks with the Castlemaine men bringing strength and pace to Killarney Athletic Park. Injuries meant a new-look side once more and it took some time to settle in. Pa McClure showed well early on with some crisp passing, renewing his understanding with Basque native Inio Lopetegui. A failure to capitalise on possession, combined with a Mainebank side dangerous from set-pieces, saw Athletic go one down and it could have been more but for the woodwork and keeper Brian O’ Connor. Brian O’ Reilly and Martin Crowley came more into the game and Rory O’ Sullivan found his scoring touch to plunder two in quick succession after some cracking, well-worked moves. Unfortunately, Mainebank responded immediately with an equalising penalty and the game was delicately poised at halftime.Gary Moynihan and his defence of Mark Griffin, McClure, Crowley and keeper Brian O’Connor rose to the sustained Mainebank challenge and with O’ Sullivan and O’Reilly bossing midfield, the game swung back in favour of the home side. The prolific Denis Galvin soon pounced to produce a brace to ease Athletic into the lead. He could have made it three with a bit of luck, before a sweet strike from Lukas with his preferred left sealed the ultimately comfortable win.
