Killarney Athletic Notes
Killarney Athletic ‘B’ 2 Killarney Celtic ‘B’ 1
Athletic had a well deserved victory over rivals Celtic on a 2-1 score line in this local derby that had all the tension of the previous nights encounter between the two ‘A’ teams. Without doubt the star of the show was David Gleeson who scored both of Athletic’s second half goals and caused problems for the Celtic rearguard throughout the contest. The opening half was an even enough affair with both defences giving little in the way of any clear cut chances to their opponents with the Athletic defence of KJ Griffin (keeper) Marc Griffin, Eamonn Ahern, Micheal O’Sullivan and veteran Sean Donoghue impressing throughout while Gary Moynihan also won a lot of ball for his side around the middle of the park. The breakthrough eventually came for Athletic on 55 minutes when Gleeson was put through by Alan Brady and although he was in a tight angle he managed to squeeze the ball past James Hurley to give Athletic the lead. Celtic came more into the game after the goal with John McDonagh and Donagh Barry in particular gaining the upper hand in the midfield battle. Ahern had to be at his best to handle the threat of Mike Shea but the Celtic striker did win a penalty on 70 minutes that McDonagh duly converted to square the contest. However Athletic responded well with youth players Ryan Carroll and Alex O’Sullivan finding more space as the half wore on, while Douglas Galbraith also brought a fresh impetus to the Athletic attack when introduced. KJ Griffin had to make a good save from McDonagh before Gleeson stole the show on 80 minutes when he ‘ghosted’ past four defenders before coolly slotting the ball to the net and scoring a goal wordy of winning any tie. Celtic pushed on frantically for an equaliser but never looked like they would breach the visitor’s solid defence with numerous chances late on falling to Athletic who ran out comfortable winners in the finish. Managers Chris Manton and Pa Howard can well be pleased with the team’s performance on the night and will hope that the squad will bring their good form into the Reserve cup.

Killarney Athletic 2 Inter Kenmare 0
Athletic continued their recent good form with a comfortable 2 – 0 win at Killarney Athletic Park Saturday 3rd April. The first half was a tame affair as neither side looked like they wanted the points. The second was much better as Athletic sought to attack from the kick off. They were rewarded when Chris O’Meara outpaced they Kenmare defence and slotted home a fine goal. Athletic continued to dominate and when Kenmare did attack the Athletic defence stood solid. David Crowley got Athletic’s second when he casually chipped the keeper from twenty yards for a superb goal and the points.

Killarney Athletic 1 Kingdom Boys 1
After a bad run that went to 3 league games without a win Athletic almost got the win they deserved getting an early goal in the 1st half scored by Daniel O’Brien who has had a great season for Athletic. With some great chances going astray for Athletic the score was 1 nil at half time but should have been 3 nil such was the dominance of Athletic in the 1st half. The second half Athletic had 3 more chances but wasted them with some poor finishing and some great saves by Kingdom Boys keeper Mark O’Shea and Shane O’Connor were outstanding for Athletic at center half, but unfortunately with the last kick of the game Kingdom Boys struck with a great goal to equalise. Best for Athletic were David Naughton, Mike Potts, Shane O’Connor and Mark O’Shea.
