7 A Side Tournament 2011

 FINALS

FINALS REPORTS

U14 Final Unknown F.C. 4 Mean Machine 2
Unknown F.C. began this game in a flurry of intent and hardly let up for the twenty minutes. With Daragh Coffey and Niall O’ Connor showing well early on, it took some smart goalkeeping from Paudie Clifford to keep them out. Liam Carey soon produced the first of his hat-trick with a fine solo effort. The ploy of playing on the break paid off for Mean Machine , when Darren O’ Doherty struck the equaliser but a mix up at the back let in Carey once more for Unknown to lead 2-1 at the break.
Possibly against the run of play, David Sheerin showed nerves of steel to steer number three past Coffey and Carey’s third ended the game as a contest. Aydan Mulvanny was unlucky not to pull one back when he struck the post but Dan O’ Donoghue’s late consolation was too little too late and Unknown ran out worthy 4-2 winners.
Man of the Match: Liam Carey.
U16 Final Aidan Kennedy Electrical 3 Free Agents 1
This game proved to be a mismatch of sorts with a dominant Aidan Kennedy Electrical side proving too strong for a game Free Agents selection. Man of the match Colm Murphy produced two fine goals early on and Eoghan Horan cracked in number three before half-time.
Paul Fleming, Andrew McCarthy, Pa O’ Callaghan and captain Fachtna O’Connor did their best to get Free Agents a foothold in the game. Indeed, O’Connor pulled one back for the losers but Chris Kerley’s men simply had too much of a lead for them.
Man of the Match: Colm Murphy
Reserve Cup Final Old Dogs 1 Bayern Neverlosing 0
The low score in this decider says it all as neither team gave in an inch in the quest for the Killarney Trophy Centre sponsored Reserve Cup. A scrappy, tight opening with Anthony Wharton to the fore for Bayern suddenly erupted when Enda Prendergast relied on his striker’s instinct to give Old Dogs the lead.
Mark Dennehy and Dan O’ Sullivan pressurised Old Dogs and Donald O’ Sullivan found his way into the game but John B. O’ Donoghue had his defence well drilled and kept them out. In a bright spell for Bayern, Dan O’ Sullivan managed to hit the target from a header but there was to be no way back before half-time.
Free-kicks and physical challenges abounded in the second half but neither team looked like conceding. Denis O’ Neill and Alan Brady came more into it in midfield for Old Dogs but the introduction of Daniel Shine sparked some intent amongst the Bayern lads and the stalemate continued. In an end to end passage of play, Adrian Hegarty smashed a gilt-edged chance off the crossbar for Old Dogs and Donald replied for Bayern but just could not steer the ball on target.
The loss of Derry O’ Sullivan to injury before the game for Bayern may have been a factor in their defeat but Old Dogs will be happy that they could call on the experience and sure touches of a rejuvenated Tadhg Kelly to see out the game.
Well done to both teams for producing such an entertaining match.
The Young Ones win Over 35 Final
Over 35 Cup Final The Young One 1 Mackey’s Crew 0
The Over 35 Final saw Mackey’s Crew and the Young Ones come head to head. The Young Ones started brightly and had some early pressure. Anthony McKenna made a dangerous run into the box before his cross was cut out by the keeper and Owen O’Sullivan had a shot that just flew over the bar. Both sides were solid defensively with Sean O’Donoghue and Jameson Hughes solid at the back for Mackey’s and Michael O’Sullivan a tower of strength at the other end. Mackey’s came into the game as the half drew to a close and Alan Brady broke from midfield and shot from distance. Unfortunately for the Reserve Cup winner from the night before, his shot flew over the bar. A cagey first half ended nil all as both teams were working hard to close down the opposition and using their benches to keep their teams fresh.
In the second half it was The Young Ones who again started the better, Stephen Flynn and Anthony McKenna both threatened but couldn’t make the break through. The pace of the game began to pick up as both teams started to search for the break through. It was now Mackey’s who had a spell on top. First Brendan “Baggio” Nagle went close after he turned on a six pence at the edge of the box. A minute later he found space on the wing and crossed low into the box but former Ireland underage International Mike Moloney could not stretch far enough to apply the finishing touch.
Both teams seem to be settling for extra time when disaster struck for Mackey’s. A defensive mix up resulted in the ball breaking to Tim Foley near the corner flag. With the keeper stranded outside the box Foley showed great composure and skill to curl the ball into the empty goal with only two minutes left.
Mackey’s Crew went on an immediate attack and Sean O’Donoghue came up from the back to have a shot. Jameson Hughes had now moved up front and Martin Dwyer saved brilliantly and bravely at his feet to wrap up the win for the Ballyhar based team.
Captain Micheal O’Sullivan accepted the trophy for the Young Ones who won a bright and entertaining contest.
Tatler Toffees win classic Premier Final on Penalties
Premier Cup Final
Tatler Toffees 4 Falvey’s Bar 4 a.e.t. (Tatler Toffees won 4-1 on penalties)
The Main Event was the clash of holders, Killorglin based Falvey’s Bar, and Killarney side Tatler Toffees. In what proved to one of the best Premier Finals ever, it was Falvey’s who took an early lead when Johnny Carey applied the finishing touch to a Ross Sheehan free kick.
Indeed, Carey caused all sorts of problems for the Tatler in the opening period and he won numerous free kicks and shot over the bar after Colin Dwyer had set up an opportunity. However it was the Tatler who equalised with a chance out of the blue when a David Looney kick-out deceived everyone and Jamie Doolan found himself in the clear. He calmly volleyed past the outstretched hand of Tony Lyons in the Falvey’s goal. The action was really heating up and there was a high tempo and tough tackling by both sides. Jamie Doolan was linking the play well for the Tatler as they began to probe for openings. Doolan beat the defence on the left hand side and squared for the inrushing John Payne who was brilliantly tackled by Colin Dwyer. Minutes later Doolan again creating an opening this time for Daithi Casey whose side footed effort went just the wrong side of the post.
As half time approached it was Falvey’s who scored a great counter attacking goal. Ross Sheehan broke up a Tatler attack and he quickly transferred the ball to Carey. Carey controlled and turned and broke into the box where he was taken down by Andrew Kennelly for a penalty. Carey dusted himself down and calmly slotted home for 2-1 to Falvey’s.
However there was more drama before half time when Kennelly did well to break up a Falvey’s attack and his pass invited Daithi Casey to have a go from distance. His superb swerving strike around the defender found the bottom corner with Lyons unsighted.
A cracking first half drew to a close with the sides level at two each.
The second half began where the first half had left off with both sides showing great determination and attacking intent. The aerial threat of Carey up front and Karl Falvey when he ventured forward from the back was causing significant problems for the Tatler. At the other, John Payne’s pace and the trickery of Doolan were testing the excellent Falvey’s rearguard of Falvey and Aidan O’Connor.
Daithi Casey threatened to repeat his first half heroics after being set up by Jeff O’Donoghue, however, Tony Lyons was equal to the task.
The dangerous Doolan turned his man on the right hand side of the attack and drove into the penalty area where he showed great composure to pick out Payne for a side footed finish. However Falvey’s immediately applied pressure and won a free kick in a dangerous area. Aidan O’Connor floated the free kick to the back post where Karl Falvey rose highest to nod in an equaliser. The sides were level again at three each with twenty minutes still to play.
Both defences started to deal better with their respective opponents with Kennelly getting on top of Carey and Falvey’s beginning to crowd out the Tatler and forcing them to shoot from distance. Andrew Kennelly was also driving forward from defence and he went close after a one two with Doolan.
Free kicks and corner kicks by Falvey’s were delivered into the box with real quality and in the closing ten minutes Karl Falvey almost got on the end of a corner to nod a go ahead goal. At the other end John Payne threatened on a number of occasions, the closest being a volley on the turn from the edge of the box that flew over the bar. Not to be outdone Dwyer juggled the football at the other end before blasting a volley over the bar.
The full time whistle blew and we were headed for extra time. The game had been open and entertaining and the large crowd was looking forward to another ten minutes of high quality action. Referee Brian Healy had contributed to the free flowing nature of the game and he was ably assisted by his assistant referees, Tom Templeman and Finbarr O’Connor
Extra Time saw Tatler substitute Gavin O’Shea look lively as the Tatler looked the fitter side. O’Shea and John Payne linked up only for Payne to shoot wide with the goal at his mercy. Falvey’s went agonisingly close when Flaherty failed to make a full contact on a Dwyer corner.
As the game entered the closing two minutes, it was the Tatler who struck late when Gavin O’Shea showed a real striker’s instinct to apply the finishing touch to a Luke Quinn header.
Falvey’s looked dead and buried but their star man Carey wasn’t finished just yet. Straight from the kick off, he found himself some space and unleashed a smashing half volley to the top corner. It was a goal to light up any final and it ensured this game would be decided with the dreaded penalty shoot-out.
In the shoot-out, David Looney in goal for the Tatler proved to be the hero with two great saves and it was left to Jamie Doolan to slot home the winner. This sparked wild celebrations for the Tatler who mobbed Looney, a player more accustomed to playing in defence than in goal.
Falvey’s had contributed to a super final which all the crowd acknowledged was one of the best finals ever in terms of commitment, goals, skills and entertainment.
John Payne lifted the Trophy for the Tatler, presented by Killarney Athletic Chairman Don O’Donoghue and George McSweeney of main Sponsors the Killarney Credit Union. Jamie Doolan picked up the Man of the Match award sponsored by Umbro and presented by Sean O’Rourke of Umbro Ireland.
The prestigious Player of the Tournament award was won by Falvey’s Johnny Carey who scored many wonderful goals in the tournament. The Kieran Cahillane Trophy was presented to Johnny by James Cahillane.
So that’s it for another year from the 7 a side as once again the competition proved exactly why it is such a firm favourite.
