Killarney Athletic Notes
Senior A Team
Killarney Athletic A 2 Classic FC 1 in FAI Cup
Killarney Athletic A team beat Classic FC 2 – 1 in the FAI Cup. The two goals came from Rory O'Sullivan the second with 5 minutes to go with Killarney Athletic down to 10 men. Super effort by the boys and brilliant attitude by the team again.

It finished all square in this local derby played in Athletic Park last weekend with the home side feeling that they should have taken all three points from the encounter. Athletic were on top early on but failed to capitalise on the chances presented to Colin Moynihan, Ozzie Quadros and Douglas Galbraith, but the latter did give Athletic a deserved lead on 30 minutes when he coolly placed his header inside the far post from 8 yards after good approach by Micheal O’Sullivan and the impressive Ryan Carroll. Celtic inspired by Donagh Barry came more into the game as the half wore on but could find no way past the stubborn Athletic defence of Tommy Ryan, Sean ‘Hansen’ O’Donoghue, Gary Moynihan and Micheal O’Sullivan. Athletic were forced to change one veteran with another early in the second half when Sean Donoghue replaced the injured Alan Brady while Givatas Brauskas came in for Connor Healy also into the middle of the park. Celtic were now enjoying their best period of the match but were fortunate not to be reduced to 10 men when Ryan Carroll was struck in an off the ball incident, but the Athletic youth player quickly shrugged off the incident and continued to give his opponents a torrid time. As with any good derby game it was never going to be over until the final whistle and with ten minutes remaining Celtic struck for an equaliser when Mike O’Shea finished well from 18 yards with ‘keeper’ KJ Griffin given no chance to prevent the goal following a short free kick. Pedro Martin came in for Ozzie in a frantic last ten minutes as both sides pressed for the winner with Colin Moynihan presented with a glorious chance to put Athletic back in front at the death but he headed O’Sullivan’s cross just wide of the post, and so the points were shared. Team managers Chris Manton and Pa Howard will be pleased with the team’s performance and spirit on the day.
Killarney Athletic Under 16
The under 16's were glad to be back in action in Woodlawn on Saturday last in a league game V Castlemaine. With debuts for Shane O’Sullivan and Cian O’Lionaird in defence Athletic took time to settle against a very committed Castlemaine side. In spite of coming close on a few occasions Athletic failed to find the net in the first half and the score was 0-0 at half time. Following a 'clear the air' discussion at half time Athletic came out much more determined in the 2nd half. An excellent header from Ronan Murphy gave Athletic the lead and Jack O’Connor quickly added a second. Padraig Nagle then took over to score a hat trick including one excellent finish with his left foot from the edge of the box. James Devane matched that finish with a cracking shot with his right foot from the edge of the box giving the keeper no chance. Castlemaine to their credit did not give up and pulled a goal back from a penalty before the hard working Conor Doyle wrapped up the game with a good finish in the last minute to give Athletic a 7-1 win. Along with those mentioned Aidan Slattery had another fine game and substitutes Patrick Coppinger and Gavin O’Shea did well when introduced. Man of the Match though for Athletic was Cian O’Lionaird on his debut with a very composed performance at left back.
Under 12 National Cup
Killarney Athletic 2 Aisling Anacotty 2
Aisling Anacotty go through 4 – 3 on penalties
This national cup game was played in perfect conditions and both teams were evenly matched throughout the game. Michael Casey continued his great run of goals with another expertly taken goal after a brilliant pass from Dylan O'Sullivan. Unfortunately we were unable to hold on to the lead until halftime when a mix-up in defence let Aisling in for a scrappy equaliser. The second half was much the same until Aisling scored again to make it 2-1. However almost immediately from the restart Gavin White struck an unstoppable shot to the top corner of the net to level things up. The score remained 2-2 right to the end of normal time and to the end of extra time. Aisling eventually went through to the next round with a 4-3 result on penalties. Well done to all the team who put in a great effort and we look forward to better days in the future.

Under 11 Futsal 5 a side held in Listowel
Killarney Athletic under 11s travelled to Listowel last Saturday and took part in the 1st futsal 5 a side in Kerry. Athletic topped their group winning 2 games and drawing the last game scoring 7 goals. In the group stages Athletic beat Killorglin 1 nil in the semi final. In the final Athletic were unlucky to lose to the Park 3 goals to nil. In a twist of faith Athletic scored 3 own goals after not conceding a goal in the whole tournament but a great day was had by all and the under 11s represented the club with pride and there are some excellent players on the team.
