Killarney Athletic AFC Notes
Under 13 National Cup
Lourdes Celtic 3 Killarney Athletic 1
We travelled to Dublin in this our fourth away fixture of the National Cup to play Lourdes Celtic. We started well and put Celtic under a lot of pressure but after 15 minutes we fell behind against the run of play when the home team headed to the net. 5 minutes later it was 2-nil, again we failed to clear our lines and were punished to go 2 nil down. To our credit we never gave up and in the second half pulled one back when Conor O’Donoghue scored. The home team went 3-1 up, again through a mistake in the back line. Athletic never gave up and were unlucky not to score again when Ronan Buckley hit the cross bar. Luck was not with us on the day but Athletic can hold their heads up for a very gutsy performance. Well done to all the panel for reaching the last 32.
Under 14 Premier
Killarney Athletic 1 Fenit 1
There are ‘Lucky’ teams and those who deserve some luck – and this under 14 team is definitely the latter. Not for the first time this season have we played a team off the park and not come away with all 3 points. Early attacks saw Dylan Trant, John O’Brien, Caiman Mangan and Danny Healy coming close with the only the woodwork saving Fenit. After David Sheerin curled one into top corner for 1-0 it looked like we were cruising! The Fenit keeper was unbeatable and saved a thunderbolt from Ayden Mulvanney, a lob from Cillian O’Regan as well as a rocket from Brendan Cronin. The backs played well with Chris O’Meara again in excellent form and Darragh Coffey picking up Man of the Match. A good team performance all round but a dubious ‘did it cross the line’ went against us (the sooner we get goalmouth technology the better!) and Fenit pegged it back to 1-1 for the final 10 minutes.
Under 16
Killarney Athletic 1 Killarney Celtic 1
We started the game missing several players but you wouldn’t think so going by the performance of our team, we nearly got the opening goal courtesy of Gavin O’Shea after good work in midfield by Keith Flynn and Ronan Murphy who gave the ball to Diarmuid Galvin who set up O'Shea but he shot narrowly wide. Celtic got the first goal of the game just on the stroke of half-time. In the second half Rory O’Riordan whipped in a great cross and Diarmuid Galvin headed effort went just wide. We got our goal with ten minutes left when Rory O’Riordan crossed a great free to Ronan Murphy who beat his marker to head the ball back across the goal to allow Diarmuid Galvin to bundle the ball over the line. As we went in search of a winner Diarmuid Galvin was taken down in the box but the ref waved play on, but sometimes you don’t get that bit of luck. A great performance by everyone, hopefully we can kick on from here!
Under 11
The under 11s travelled to Listowel last Saturday for a rearranged league game. Athletics defence was strong with Athletic trailing 1-0 at half time with a very harsh penalty given against us. Fresh faces were introduced at half time and Athletic had numerous attacks and only for the opposition’s keeper, could have been in the lead. Listowel scored 2 more late goals to kill off the game. Best for Athletic were Nely O’Doherty and Michael Potts. Training continues this Thursday at 6.00pm at Woodlawn with the local derby against Mashergeeha next Saturday.
Under 9 & 10
The 9/10 year olds were in Tralee last weekend and played in a mini-blitz with Kingdom Boys and the Park both clubs from Tralee. Athletic had 3 teams in action on the day and all acquitted themselves well. It was a great experience for the boys and it was a very enjoyable day. Thanks to Kingdom Boys for arranging and hosting the blitz.
