Under 17 Keele International Cup

Killarney Athletic A.F.C entered this very prestigious event for the first time this year as not just a serious competition to win but as a trip away for the Under 17 team who worked hard this season at both Under 17 level and at Youths. This event was on in the UK just outside Newcastle & Stoke and had over 300 teams from 25 countries competing in all age groups. Athletic started slow against Newcastle B and went 1-0 down very quickly but goals from Chris O’Meara and David Sheerin brought us back into the match only for a last minute equaliser to draw the game. Next up was a team from USA called Madeley White Stars but Athletic too strong winning 4-1 with goals from Chris O’Meara, David Sheerin, Brendan Cronin and ‘on loan’ from our Celtic neighbours Matt Keane. With us leading the Group at that stage – we met a strong Kenyan team N’Dogo and only a goal from Matt Keane kept us in the game with a 1-1 draw but left us second in table. That meant we had to play the winners of the other group in a semi-final which was Erin Mill Academy from Canada who were the closest to semi-professional outfit that one could get. Athletic held them close going into half-time at 1-1 but their class showed through and they won the game 4-1. Some consolation to the Athletic boys is that they went on to win the final 4-0. A big thanks to Mike O’Shea who planned this trip with military precision with time thrown in for Alton Towers, Paint balling and shopping in Manchester to ensure that it wasn’t all about soccer. Another big thanks to James Lyne and Brendan Cronin who helped out on the trip and a special thanks to the coaches Robin O’Day and JP Mullins who brought these lads to the standard needed on this trip- the feedback from the players is that we played some of our best soccer over there. You have done the Club, County and Country proud.

Killarney Athletic Annual Golf Classic sponsored by Monex
