Killarney Athletic Notes
FAI Junior Cup
Killarney Athletic 5 Listowel Celtic 0
In truth, this FAI Junior Cup clash was all Killarney Athletic from the get-go. Joe Hurley and Martin Crowley showed well early on in the middle of the park and with Rory O’Sullivan linking up well with Lukas Polak on the right, along with some nice touches from David Gleeson, Adam Moynihan and Brian O’Reilly on the left, the opener beckoned for the home side. The first real chance came for Listowel though, but Micheal Lynch was well covered by Ryan O’Carroll. A well-worked free-kick sent Athletic in front. After a hand ball, Brian O’Reilly drilled it into Crowley who made no mistake with a booming first-time strike. Also, Lukas was having a great battle with Richie Halpin down the right which yielded a free-kick and corner in quick succession for Athletic but with Lynch and Robbie Hanlon improving in midfield, Listowel came more into it. Adam Twomey had a half chance but Brian O’Connor was equal to the task. Then Rory O’Sullivan was denied by Kevin Flavin, the Listowel keeper, after some nice skill from Moynihan. The game deteriorated for a spell, with lots of stoppages, offside and poor passing but goal number two came via Lukas who won a free-kick which was sent all the way to the net by the precise Hurley. Kevin Murphy and Mikey Paul Kelliher almost got in for Listowel but O’Connor would not be beaten. The last chance of the half came to Lukas who just couldn’t get it past Flavin to O’Sullivan who had the goal at his mercy. The game ended as a contest early in the second period when Lukas got the goal his hard-working performance deserved when he easily finished to the net after dispossessing a Listowel defender. Micheal Lynch, Richie Halpin and Kevin Murphy never gave up but James Coffey and Kenneth Clifford, ably assisted by Ryan O’Carroll and Brian O’Reilly (and sub Inigio) kept them at bay. Denis Galvin struck for number four with a sleek finish and David Gleeson would have claimed a spectacular fifth but for a great save from Flavin. Alex O’Sullivan set up Crowley for number five. Athletic got the goals when it mattered, leaving Listowel with too much to do get back into the game. Best for Listowel were Kevin Flavin, Micheal Lynch, Richie Halpin and Kevin Murphy, while for Athletic in a solid team display, Martin Crowley was outstanding, with Lukas Polak a constant thorn in the side of Listowel.
Under 14 National Cup
Killarney Athletic 3 Glenview Stars Limerick 1
Talk about leaving your shooting boots on the bus!! Athletic should have finished this match with a cricket score with Ziauel Hoque, Danny Healy and David Sheerin peppering the Glenview goal with no result. Their keeper spent most of his time taking the ball out of the ditch! With the backline of Darragh Coffey, Chris O’Meara, Corey Doyle, Shane Lyne and Mark O’Shea keeping their strike force pinned to midfield it gave Caiman Mangan and Danny Healy opportunities to attack, attack and attack. We eventually got off the mark with Cillian O’Regan smashing the ball into the top corner with a cool volley. This game was always under our control despite some dodgy refereeing decisions and the second half saw David Murphy, John O’Brien and Kyle Griffin continuing the pressure upfront resulting in Man of the Match Aydan Mulvanney pinging a fine effort past the keeper. Chris O’Meara continued to impress with a fine individual goal worthy of making the journey worthwhile. The Athletic Coaches were, deep down, happy with the display even though they might find it hard to express it! The day can be summed up by Van the Man song – my momma told me there’ll be days like this!
Under 13 National Cup
Killarney Athletic 8 Castleisland 2
This was a lot harder game than the score line would suggest. Michael Casey put Athletic 2 up within the first 10 minutes but Castleisland to their credit battled hard and pulled one back half way through the first half. Castleisland had the better of the chances for the remainder of the half and in truth were unlucky not to be at least level at half time. Athletic upped their game considerably in the second half and further goals from Michael Casey, Adam O’Shea and Ronan Buckley gave Athletic a comfortable win in the end. Best for Athletic on the day was Michael Casey with 5 goals.
Under 13 Division 2
Killarney Athletic 1 Killarney Celtic 2
We were unlucky not to come away with a draw in this game when the Celtic goalkeeper saved from the penalty spot. Celtic went ahead midway through the first half but Paul Clarke equalised just before half time. Some sloppy defending let Celtic in for a second, but a missed penalty cost Athletic a point.
