FAI Junior Cup 28th November 2010
Killarney Athletic 0 Avenue Utd 1
Report by KJ Griffin
Played in cold but sunny conditions, this FAI Junior Cup clash certainly lived up to the expectations of any major cup competition. The tempo set by the players from the very first whistle to the last was outstanding and was duly matched by the atmosphere created by the small gathering that braved the cold to be there. Although the game proved to be the end of the line for Athletic in the competition there are plenty of positive signs for their league campaign getting the kick start it needs. Athletic started the game brightly and took the game to Avenue but it was the away team that created the game’s first half chance but Avenue’s striker Barry Nugent dragged his effort wide. Athletic responded immediately from the kickout with Adam Moynihan picking the ball up on the half-way line. He had a quick look up and played a superb ball over the top to David Gleeson who came so close to opening the scoring only to shoot just wide. Avenue took heed of this early wake-up call and up the pace of the game. James Coffey and Martin Crowley defended admirably for the home side throughout and time after time foiled the attack’s of the opposition. Brian O’Connor had to be on his toes in the 12th minute when Avenue were awarded a close range free-kick but he was equal to the task and saved well. Gradually Athletic came into it more midway through the half and this was mainly down to the quality of young Ryan O’Carroll. He proved to be a real thorn in Avenue’s side and only for an excellent save by John Healy he could have had a marauding run down the wing rewarded with a fine goal. With not long left in the half the best chance of the game so far fell to David Gleeson after Rory O’Sullivan cut the ball back along the endline to him and under some heavy pressure his shot struck the outside of the post. Avenue again responded well and Michael Mahony flashed a header just wide down the other end. Avenue had a few more chances to get the opener but just couldn’t hit the target. Avenue started the second half as they finished the first with David McCarthy taking control in midfield and tried hard to get the better of the Athletic defense but found it difficult until the 57th minute when Nugent managed to slip in behind the Athletic rearguard and place his effort goalward past O’Connor in the Athletic goal but James Coffey came to the rescue and swept it clear off the line. This sparked renewed life into the crowd and chances came thick and fast but nothing of real consequence. Athletic almost took the lead in the 64th minute when a Joe Hurley free kick was just missed by the head of Ryan O’Carroll at the back post. The tension was starting to build both on and off the pitch and only for the cool head of the man in black, John Hegarty, things could have gotten out of hand when a few rash challenges were made by both sides. Luckily, nothing materialised from them and the game now really started to open up. Gary Moynihan had a fine headed effort saved by Healy in the 73rd minute but Avenue made a quick breakaway down the right wing through their full back Matthew Nugent and his driven ball to the back post deceived everyone and found the back of the net. Athletic threw everything at the opposition for the remaining 15 minutes but couldn’t fashion another goal threatening chance and Avenue held out for the win. A bitter pill to swallow for Athletic but it wasn’t to be their day. Both teams performed fantastically throughout and best for Athletic were James Coffey, Ryan O’Carroll, Conor Farrell and Martin Crowley. Best for Avenue were David McCarthy, John Healy and David Russell. Teams: Athletic: Brian O’Connor, Gary Moynihan, James Coffey, Martin Crowley, Brian O’Reilly, Ryan O’Carroll, Joe Hurley, Conor Farrell, Adam Moynihan, Rory O’Sullivan, David Gleeson

Killarney Athletic 2 Park FC 2
In artic conditions we started the game red hot and we got the opening goal through Jack O’Connor who beat the keeper with a thunderous shot from the edge of the box after being put through by a pass that Xavi would be proud of courtesy of Ronan Murphy. Our second goal was a more scrappy affair as Shane O’Sullivan reacted fast to poke the ball into the goal from a corner. We then took our foot off the gas and left the park in for two soft goals before half-time. The second half of the game was a real end to end game with both teams going for all three points. We can thank the excellent defending from our back four especially Shane O’Sullivan and Stephen Cahillane in goals for keeping The Park out, we were also unlucky not to get a goal ourselves through Rory O’Riordan who gave the right back a torrid time, Ronan Murphy, Gavin O’Shea and Jack O’Connor all came close but alas we just couldn't get that bit of luck in front of goal. Best for us were Ronan Murphy, Gavin O’Shea, Cian O’Lionard, Steven Cahillane and the outstanding Rory O’Riordan.
