Killarney Athletic Notes
A Team League
Killarney Athletic 6 Ratoo Rovers 2
On Thursday night in Killarney Athletic Park the senior team moved one step closer to securing a place in the league final. Despite going down 1-0 almost from the kick-off, the lads did enough to easily secure the three points. The game began with Ratoo going ahead, a soft goal catching Athletic unawares from the kick-off. Referee John Hegarty awarded the home side a penalty before long and Shane Bunyan hit the first of three for him, to bring Athletic back into the game. Lucas got number two and the floodgates looked fit to burst. Incredibly, Ratoo were next to score and the teams saw out the half in an uninspiring stalemate. Some positional changes in the home side saw Athletic begin the second half the livelier and Bunyan squeezed one in to give them a 3-2 lead. Then, drama. The second penalty of the match, this time for Ratoo, came from an innocuous tangle in the box but the post saved Athletic. This stroke of luck signaled an improvement across the field and goals from Shane Bunyan – securing his hat-trick –, Edward O’Sullivan and a first senior goal for Ryan O’Carroll put the game beyond the Ballyduff men. The return game in Ballyduff will prove difficult but with more intent the lads should be superior.
Under 14
Athletic had a fine home win in the cup when they recorded a 4 – 0 result. Jason Brennan, Dylan Sheehan and Roy Kelliher were among the goals to set up a final with local rivals Celtic in Woodlawn.
Cup Final
Killarney Athletic 0 Killarney Celtic 0

Athletic were unlucky to go down 3 – 0 with a deflected goal and a penalty, their undoing. The first half was a tight affair and both sides had chances with Jason Brennan going close for Athletic. The first half ended 0 – 0 but Athletic were dealt a blow when Brennan was taken off injured on the stroke of half time. The second half flew by with play swinging from end to end with Celtic scoring the vital goals. So Athletic’s cup run ended at the final hurdle. However, Athletic’s coach Donie Murphy was proud of his team as they gave it their all, and the fact that the Celtic keeper got the “man of the match” award tells its own story!
